Basil Hayden Sr. - known to subsequent generations as Old Grand-Dad - made bourbon according to his ideas. Going against the traditional "grain" of the time, he chose to distil his bourbon with a higher percentage of rye.

He probably passed this way of making bourbon on to his son. And who in turn to his grandson. That was Colonel RB Hayden, who would rightly name his bourbon after his aged grandfather. The recipe is still inspired by Basil's original today, with complex flavors and a distinctive spiciness. The bourbon was first bottled in 1882 and has hardly changed to this day.

TASTING NOTES
Nase
Nose		 Dark sweets like caramel and fudge, followed by vanilla, caramelized fruits, spices, oak and raw grains. A hint of vegetable wax hides in the background.
Gaumen
Palate		 Caramel, oak, spices and vanilla make up most of the flavor, with light notes of white pepper and leather emerging towards the end.
Abgang
Finish		 Long finish with caramel, oak, spices, vanilla and a light grain note.

    Old Grand-Dad ist eine Bourbon-Whiskey-Marke, die in der Jim Beam Plant in Clermont, Kentucky, gebrannt wird.

    Basil Hayden Sr. - den nachfolgenden Generationen als "Old Grand-Dad" bekannt - stellte Bourbon nach seinen Vorstellungen her. Er wandte sich gegen den traditionellen "Grain" der Zeit und entschied sich dafür, seinen Bourbon mit einem höheren Anteil an Roggen zu destillieren.

    Diese Art der Herstellung von Bourbon hat er wahrscheinlich an seinen Sohn weitergegeben. Und der wiederum an seinen Enkel. Das war Colonel R.B. Hayden, der seinen Bourbon zu Recht nach seinem alten Großvater benennen würde.

    Das Rezept ist auch heute noch von Basils Original inspiriert, mit komplexen Aromen und einer unverwechselbaren Würze. Der Bourbon wurde erstmals 1882 abgefüllt und hat sich bis heute kaum verändert. Und das ist auch der einzige Weg, wie wir ihn haben wollen.
