Scotch Whisky (often simply called whisky or Scotch) is a malt or grain whisky (or a mixture of both) produced in Scotland.

All Scottish whiskies were originally made from malted barley. Commercial distilleries began introducing whisky made from wheat and rye in the late 18th century. In 2020, there were over 130 active whisky distilleries in Scotland.

All Scottish whiskies that want to be called Scotch must age for at least three years in oak barrels. Any age statement on a bottle of Scottish whisky, expressed in numbers, must reflect the age of the youngest whisky used in making that product. A whisky with an age statement is referred to as guaranteed age whisky. A whisky without an age statement is referred to as No Age Statement (NAS) whisky, where the only guarantee is that all whisky contained in that bottle is at least three years old. The minimum bottling strength, according to regulation, is 40% abv. Scottish whisky is divided into five different categories: Single Malt Scotch Whisky, Single Grain Scotch Whisky, Blended Malt Scotch Whisky (formerly called "vatted malt" or "pure malt"), Blended Grain Scotch Whisky, and Blended Scotch Whisky.
