The Nantou Distillery, located in Nantou Hsien, Taiwan, was founded in 1978 by the Taiwan Tobacco & Liquor Corporation, a state-owned Taiwanese manufacturer of tobacco and alcohol.
However, it did not produce its first whisky until 2008. Before 2010, mash, wort, and wash were produced in a nearby brewery, which Nantou no longer used once the distillery installed its own German mash tun and washbacks.
The whisky is made with imported barley from Scotland and pure underground water sourced from the central mountain range of Taiwan, flowing through the ancient forest in Nantou Paowei Mountain.
