DESCRIPTION

  • Hakushu - Japanese Whisky

The Hakushu Distillery, founded in 1973 by Suntory, is a significant distillery in Japan known for its exceptional whiskies. Located in the foothills of Mount Kaikomagatake in Yamanashi Prefecture, it is often referred to as the "mountain forest distillery." The distillery's location amidst dense forests and pure springs gives its whiskies unique aromas and characteristics.

Hakushu whiskies are distinguished by their fresh, herbal, and slightly smoky notes. The distillery uses the clear, soft water of the region, filtered through ancient granite rocks, which contributes to the purity and smoothness of its whiskies. These special conditions allow the Hakushu Distillery to produce single malts that are both delicate and complex.

Some of the most important whiskies from the Hakushu Distillery include the Hakushu Distiller's Reserve, a younger whisky without an age statement that embodies the distillery's characteristic fresh and grassy notes.

The Hakushu 12 Years Old is known for its balance of fresh, grassy notes and a light smoky note and is highly sought after by connoisseurs and collectors worldwide.

A more mature whisky is the Hakushu 18 Years Old, which has deeper, nuttier, and smokier notes and is often aged in sherry casks for added complexity.

Finally, there is the Hakushu 25 Years Old, a rare and highly prized release known for its deep complexity and rich aromas.

The Hakushu Distillery uses a variety of pot stills and casks to produce a wide range of flavor profiles. The innovative use of wooden washbacks during fermentation and the selection of various cask types, including bourbon and sherry casks, contribute to the diversity of Hakushu whiskies.

The combination of unique natural surroundings, traditional craftsmanship, and modern technology makes the Hakushu Distillery an outstanding example of the high art of Japanese whisky production.
